Champions League football on a Thursday? This week’s unusual schedule features Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Roma among the clubs taking part.
When the men’s Champions League adopted its new format for the 2024-25 season, one week of each campaign was reserved solely for Europe’s leading club tournament. Fixtures during that period are staged on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with no Europa League or Conference League matches being held.
That exclusive period arrives immediately this season, having been allocated to the opening round of the league phase, with matches scheduled from 8 to 10 September.
Fans are used to watching Champions League games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays before the Europa League and Conference League take centre stage on Thursdays. For the most part, that familiar pattern will return in 2026-27.
The Europa League and Conference League are also each given a dedicated week of their own.
During the Europa League’s exclusive week, fixtures will be contested over two evenings: Wednesday, 16 September and Thursday, 17 September.
The Conference League’s dedicated period consists of a single evening, with matches scheduled for Thursday, 17 December. No other European tournament fixtures will be played on the preceding Tuesday or Wednesday.
