Champions League players will be handed a one-game suspension after collecting four yellow cards.
The regulation applies from the beginning of the league stage through to the conclusion of the quarter-finals. At that point, all accumulated yellow cards are cleared, preventing players from being banned because of multiple cautions.
These regulations are also in effect in the Europa League and the Conference League.
Five players collected two yellow cards across the first two rounds of the Champions League, leaving each of them two bookings short of a one-match suspension ahead of this week’s third round.
Further one-game bans are imposed when a player reaches six, eight or 10 yellow cards. In other words, every additional even-numbered total after four results in another one-match suspension.
