South African authorities have confirmed that Zimbabwean footballer Divine Lunga escaped a shooting incident in Johannesburg.

The 31-year-old athlete was traveling through the Hillbrow neighborhood on Sunday when an unidentified assailant opened fire on his vehicle, local sources report.

Lunga, who represents both the Zimbabwe national side and South African powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns, emerged from the ordeal without injury.

Crime remains a significant challenge across South Africa, a nation that records one of the globe’s highest homicide rates.

Police representative Captain Tintswalo Sibeko stated that authorities are looking into an attempted murder case, though no suspects have been apprehended.

She declined to offer additional details, though as reported by South African news outlet The Citizen, Lunga was traveling to church with his younger brother when the ambush occurred.

The pair were navigating through Hillbrow at the time the attacker shot at their vehicle, reportedly under the impression that Lunga was a plainclothes law enforcement officer.

Lunga has earned 21 caps for Zimbabwe’s national team and was included in the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The defender signed with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021 and has since contributed to four domestic league championships, along with the club’s second African Champions League triumph in May.

Neither side has issued a statement about the attack, though Zimbabwe’s national team, known as the Warriors, shared an image of Lunga in a prayerful pose accompanied by a brief message reading “In God we trust” alongside his name.
