Queens Park Rangers could be without midfielder Glen Kamara for Friday’s Championship meeting with West Ham United if Fifa becomes involved in a disagreement between his club and national team.
The Finnish Football Association says the 30-year-old was recalled from international duty by QPR, external link before Tuesday’s Uefa Nations League fixture against Hungary.
Finland head coach Jacob Friis said Kamara faced a challenging decision after his club demanded that he leave the national squad and travel back to London, an outcome Finland did not want.
Under Fifa regulations, players released for international duty must remain available to their national sides throughout the full window unless all parties agree to an early return.
The rules also state that a player who leaves international duty cannot represent their club during the five days following the window unless the relevant national association grants permission.
Kamara’s availability for Friday’s match against West Ham may therefore be in doubt, as the fixture is scheduled only three days after the international period ends.
Finnish FA general secretary Marco Casagrande said the regulations were unambiguous and, in the association’s opinion, had not been fully respected in this instance, according to Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, external link.
Casagrande added that Fifa would be notified because Kamara had not remained available for the full international window. The governing body would then decide whether further action was necessary.
Kamara has started three of QPR’s first eight Championship matches this season and appeared as a substitute in four others. Rangers currently occupy sixth place in the standings.
The midfielder missed Finland’s opening Nations League match against San Marino, played the first half of their next fixture against Belarus and entered Saturday’s game against Albania at half-time.
QPR have been contacted for a response.
