The Irish Football Association has called for new leadership at Fifa and confirmed that it will not support president Gianni Infantino in next year’s re-election.
Infantino has faced mounting scrutiny since an unsuccessful effort to sell a 21% share of Fifa’s commercial business to a private investment firm.
The proposal was abandoned following widespread opposition, including a warning from Uefa that it could boycott every Fifa competition.
Northern Ireland’s football governing body had already supported Uefa’s position without officially withdrawing its backing for Infantino. It has now said that his proposal created serious concerns about his leadership.
In a statement, the association said that seeking to transfer part of Fifa’s assets to a private equity company without consultation went beyond poor communication and prompted major questions about strategy, governance and the management of those assets.
It added that the moment had arrived for a change in leadership.
The football associations of England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland had already publicly withdrawn their support for Infantino, who is expected to seek a fourth presidential term in March.
If the 56-year-old Swiss official wins another term, he will have remained in the role for 15 years by the time it concludes in 2031.
