Jed Ward: Walsall Keeper Delivering ‘Premier League’ Performances

News

Walsall have maintained an impressive standard under new manager Grant, despite making major changes to their squad, with the entire team matching the quality shown by their defence.

They remain the EFL’s only unbeaten side after 11 matches. However, seven draws and four victories leave them in fourth place.

Pressley scored twice, including a penalty, after Sodje opened the scoring as Walsall eased past Oldham, even though Elicha Ahui’s red card forced them to play the final 30 minutes with 10 men.

Grant said the match highlighted two different qualities within his squad. His players attacked with purpose and controlled much of the first half before showing resilience, determination and fighting spirit after being reduced to 10 men.

He suggested that succeeding in those difficult circumstances made the result feel even more rewarding.

Walsall were top of League Two at Christmas in each of the previous two campaigns, but their form declined both times and they missed out on promotion.

Pressley arrived in the summer of 2025 after being involved in last season’s disappointing finish. He has already surpassed his previous campaign’s scoring total, registering eight goals so far, seven of them in league matches.

Pressley and Grant believe the squad’s depth could help Walsall sustain their form this season. The manager has regularly rotated his line-up and has yet to select the same starting team in consecutive games, despite the strong results.

Grant explained that he has confidence in every member of the squad, adding that having numerous reliable options should prove valuable over the course of a long season.

Pressley also praised the team’s strength in depth, noting that four changes were made on Tuesday and that the substitutes have consistently performed well. He believes their ability to adjust the side between matches is a significant advantage.

Walsall’s unbeaten run may face its toughest challenge in their next home fixture, when league leaders Salford visit on Monday.

Pressley acknowledged the importance of the match but said the players must concentrate on what they can influence, particularly their work in training and their preparations.

He believes that approach will leave Walsall well prepared for the upcoming contest.
