He further stated: “Provided he remains active and fit enough to be called up, I will select him, within specific boundaries and according to the standards I believe suit the national side best.

“I have yet to talk with [Ronaldo]. He will never become an issue for the national team. Not for the squad, nor for myself.

“It was a genuine pleasure collaborating with him throughout this past year, it’s effortless to work alongside him.”

Jesus’ debut match at the helm will see Portugal face Wales in their opening Nations League Group D fixture on 24 September.

In four years, Portugal will jointly stage the World Cup alongside Spain and Morocco.

Jesus, who secured a domestic treble with Saudi side Al Hilal during the 2023-24 campaign, claimed three league championships in his initial tenure as boss of Portuguese club Benfica in 2010, 2014, and 2015.

The Portuguese manager also thrived during his single year in Brazil with Flamengo, collecting five major honours, including the domestic league title and the Copa Libertadores in 2019.
