Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has backed Kylian Mbappe over how he spent the international break, calling the criticism directed at the forward “absurd”.
France captain Mbappe pulled out of international duty after suffering an injury against Turkey on 25 September.
He subsequently posted pictures on social media showing him attending a Paris Fashion Week event and cycling, despite Mourinho previously saying that riding a bicycle was against his rules.
“Things are always viewed differently when Real Madrid are involved,” Mourinho said.
“Every player did exactly what was required of them during the break, but people still try to find additional controversies and problems.
“I can guarantee that if a Real Madrid player fails to meet the standards expected of him and stops representing the club properly, even for 24 hours, he will not be selected for the bench and will remain at home.”
Mourinho also said that a picture of Mbappe cycling in Switzerland had been taken out of context, explaining that the hotel complex provided bicycles so guests could make short trips.
When asked whether the reaction to Mbappe’s activities had been excessive, he replied: “I would not call it exaggerated—I would call it absurd.
“If Mbappe plays tomorrow, it will be because he has not let Real Madrid down and has completed all of his responsibilities to the club,” Mourinho added.
After seven matches, Real sit six points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Mbappe, 27, is regarded as one of the leading contenders for this year’s Ballon d’Or. He registered 42 goals in 44 club appearances last season, although his side ended the campaign without a trophy.
He also claimed the World Cup Golden Boot after scoring 10 times, raising his career total in the tournament to a record 22 goals, despite France finishing in fourth place.
