Real Madrid’s flawless opening to the La Liga season came to an end on Friday as Real Betis claimed a 1-0 victory. Substitute Troy Parrott scored with nine minutes remaining, while goalkeeper Alvaro Valles denied Kylian Mbappé from the penalty spot in added time.
The match started at a lively pace, although the intensity faded after half-time in the Seville heat. Parrott entered the game in the 68th minute and broke the deadlock in the 81st, reacting fastest after Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois pushed a header into his path.
Mbappé hit the crossbar four minutes later, before substitute Carlos Espí connected with Vinícius Júnior’s cross using an acrobatic overhead kick. However, a VAR review ruled out the apparent equaliser for offside.
Nelson Deossa then came close to securing the result for Betis with an ambitious long-range strike after noticing Courtois away from his goal, but the keeper recovered in time to make the save.
José Mourinho’s Madrid received one final chance when Natan fouled Vinícius inside the penalty area late in stoppage time. Valles stopped Mbappé’s penalty, protecting Betis’s advantage and confirming all three points.
Paris Saint-Germain appeared set to record their first Ligue 1 victory of the campaign after Marquinhos gave the home side the lead in the 31st minute. However, Monaco responded through Flavio Nazinho in the 58th minute and Stanis Idumbo in the 72nd. Monaco sit at the top of the standings as the only side to have won each of their first three matches.
PSG had previously recorded 2-2 draws against Rennes and Lille in their opening two league fixtures, having also suffered a 1-0 defeat to Lens in the French Super Cup the previous month.
Their first league loss arrived only hours after the club confirmed new contracts for head coach Luis Enrique and a number of players.
João Neves, Lucas Beraldo, Senny Mayulu and Willian Pacho agreed deals lasting until 2031, while Fabian Ruiz extended his contract through to 2028.
