La Liga chief Javier Tebas says allegations of a refereeing plot against Real Madrid are equivalent to “living on another planet”.
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho criticised the officials for several major decisions following his team’s 2-1 defeat by city rivals Atletico Madrid last week.
At the post-match media conference, Mourinho presented printed screenshots which he said showed that two Atletico players should have been dismissed during the opening half.
Responding to a Spanish media report alleging a “conspiracy” against Real Madrid, Tebas rejected the suggestion.
“Suggesting that referees have been instructed to work against Real Madrid is like living on another planet,” Tebas wrote on social media.
“This argument is being used to distract from other problems that have been clearly visible during the opening matches of the campaign.
“Blaming a supposed conspiracy is easier than addressing what is actually taking place on the field.”
Real Madrid sit fourth in La Liga, trailing leaders Barcelona by six points. Barcelona have collected 21 points after winning each of their first seven league fixtures.
Mourinho questioned the refereeing after the loss to Atletico, a heated match in which Real defender Dean Huijsen was sent off, leaving his team with 10 players.
“There is hardly any need for a press conference because these images tell the story of the game,” Mourinho said while displaying the printouts to reporters.
“Both incidents deserved red cards. Considering how difficult it became for us when playing 11 against 10, imagine how different the match could have been with 11 players facing nine for 50 minutes.”
Tebas has previously criticised Real Madrid and club president Florentino Perez, particularly after opposing their proposal to participate in a European Super League in 2021.
In 2025, he said the club had “lost its way” after it submitted an official complaint to the Spanish football authorities regarding refereeing standards in the league.
