The statistics make grim reading: Coventry City have become only the second side in Premier League history to open a season with four consecutive defeats without scoring. Even so, Frank Lampard will continue reminding his squad that there have been encouraging signs.
Coventry have troubled their opponents at times and have already played three teams competing in Europe. Their performances have not been entirely poor either, as Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen earning player-of-the-match recognition demonstrated. However, the promoted club urgently need a goal or a point to restore confidence before concerns about relegation become increasingly serious.
Charalampos Kostoulas, Malick Yalcouyé, Lewis Dunk and Yasin Ayari all produced outstanding finishes, with Dunk’s effort particularly memorable. Coventry also contributed to their own downfall. Lampard accepted Taiwo Awoniyi’s dismissal for catching Maxim De Cuyper in the face with his elbow, as well as the penalty Bobby Thomas conceded before Pascal Gross converted Brighton’s third goal. Lampard’s choice to retain an attacking system after the red card may also come under scrutiny.
Lampard acknowledged that the heavy home defeat was painful. He felt Coventry performed well in the first half, created the clearer opportunities and placed Brighton under sustained pressure, but said an error leading to the second goal and the subsequent dismissal transformed the match.
He added that several decisive moments could have unfolded differently, although Coventry must honestly assess their failure to convert opportunities at this level. Lampard admitted that the outcome was extremely difficult to accept.
The emphatic result supported Fabian Hürzeler’s view that Brighton remain strong in attack despite Danny Welbeck leaving during the summer. They have scored more goals and fashioned more major opportunities than any other Premier League team this season, recording their most prolific start to a top-flight campaign.
Hürzeler explained that Brighton do not depend on a single prolific forward. Instead, their strength comes from having several players who are eager and capable of scoring. He was especially pleased with the team’s efficiency and ruthlessness in front of goal.
Kostoulas provided the first example of that clinical quality with an excellent opening goal. The Greek teenager controlled a high ball with his foot, guided it between two defenders with his head and calmly drove his shot into the bottom corner.
Brighton might have been trailing before that breakthrough had Verbruggen not made two impressive stops against Jack Rudoni, pushing away both a volley and a header.
During the interval, Lampard encouraged his players to remain confident. Within two minutes of the restart, however, Coventry’s chances had effectively disappeared.
Brighton doubled their advantage when Yalcouyé broke beyond Coventry’s back line. The Ivorian used his speed to stay clear of the recovering defenders before confidently placing the ball past Carl Rushworth.
Soon afterwards, Coventry were reduced to 10 players. The collision involving Awoniyi and De Cuyper initially looked unintentional, but referee Tony Harrington correctly noticed that the Nigerian had led with his elbow and immediately showed a red card. The mood inside the ground worsened when supporters were informed that cancelled trains would prevent departures from the stadium for 90 minutes after the match.
Thomas then brought down Kostoulas inside the penalty area with a challenge that left little room for debate. Gross took responsibility and confidently sent the resulting spot kick into the bottom corner.
Many spectators were already heading for the exits when Dunk completed the rout with the finest goal of his career, powering an extraordinary shot into the top corner from 35 yards. The defender admitted that even he had been surprised by the strike and described the moment as delightful.
Ayari added another superb goal during stoppage time, bending a long-range effort into the bottom corner.
Crystal Palace in 2017-18 are the only other side to have lost their opening four Premier League fixtures without finding the net. They eventually recovered to finish 11th after turning to Roy Hodgson, and Coventry will hope they can revive their season without requiring similar emergency action.
