Like Vozinha, Marc-Vivien Foe was largely unfamiliar to international audiences before the 1994 World Cup.
Although Cameroon endured an underwhelming tournament in the United States compared with their memorable 1990 campaign, Foe established himself as one of the squad’s strongest players in his first World Cup appearance.
His impressive display against Brazil drew widespread interest and earned him a free transfer from Canon Yaounde in Cameroon to French club Lens.
During four years with Lens, Foe played an important role in securing the club’s first league championship in the 1997-98 season.
He later represented West Ham United, Manchester City and Lyon, winning the French League Cup and helping Lyon claim their maiden Ligue 1 crown in 2002.
Foe died tragically in June 2003 after collapsing during a Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia.
