Premier League players who collect at least five yellow cards before their club completes its 19th league fixture of the season will serve a one-game ban.
Three players have already been booked three times during the opening four rounds of Premier League fixtures this season. As a result, they must avoid receiving another two yellow cards before the campaign reaches its halfway stage.
Once that point has passed, the limit rises to 10 cautions. A player who reaches this total before their club finishes its 32nd league fixture will be suspended for two matches.
Additional disciplinary limits are then set at 15 and 20 yellow cards.
A player who accumulates 15 cautions receives a three-match ban, while the penalty for reaching 20 yellow cards is decided by a regulatory commission.
These disciplinary thresholds remain in place until the Premier League season concludes.
Comparable rules also apply across the Championship, League One and League Two.
Because each of these three divisions features 46 rounds rather than 38, players must stay below 10 yellow cards until their club has completed its 37th league fixture to avoid a two-game suspension.
In these competitions, yellow-card totals are cleared after the regular season, and cautions received during the play-offs are counted separately.
