Robbie Savage made a perfect start to life as an EFL manager, guiding Peterborough United to a 3-1 victory over Leicester City at King Power Stadium and increasing the pressure on Russell Martin.
Parkin: “It was an outstanding beginning for Robbie Savage, especially on his return to the club with which he is perhaps most closely associated. His appointment has attracted plenty of discussion this week, although there is still limited knowledge of his managerial abilities after his journey through non-league football.
“I am keeping an open mind about the decision and what he may achieve. From what I have heard, he wants his side to perform with great energy and apply aggressive pressure from the front.
“This always looked like a promising fixture for him because Leicester City have a distinctive approach but are willing to take chances in possession. From a tactical perspective, the match unfolded almost exactly as he would have wanted.
“It is only the beginning, but he has taken charge of a squad featuring an excellent finisher in Harry Leonard, so finding someone capable of turning opportunities into goals should not be a major concern. The team is young and may require some experienced additions during the upcoming transfer window, but I believe the squad has more quality than its league position suggests. That gives Robbie a very good opportunity.
“Adapting to the greater attention that comes with this role will be difficult. His reputation and outspoken character also mean opponents and critics are likely to focus closely on everything he does.
“Over the past 10 to 15 years, Peterborough have built a reputation for adventurous football and scoring plenty of goals. That is how I have always viewed the club, and it appears Savage intends to follow the same philosophy, which supporters should welcome enthusiastically.”
