England’s triumph marked only the third occasion Mexico had lost at the venue across 90 competitive fixtures.
Tuchel called it one of the campaign’s standout moments and praised the “strong connection” among the squad, particularly their response when Jordan Henderson suffered a tournament-ending injury after tumbling over an advertising board during the celebrations at the Azteca.
“The match contained almost everything you could have hoped for,” the German said. “If anyone needed evidence of how much it mattered to the players and how deeply they cared for one another, it came when Jordan fell and broke his arm.
“The players rushed to him immediately. The entire squad stopped celebrating, formed a protective barrier around Jordan and stayed by his side with genuine concern. It was an extraordinary moment.”
England’s next match is against World Cup champions Spain on 26 September in their opening fixture of the 2026-27 Uefa Nations League, while Tuchel is also looking ahead to the 2028 European Championship.
Believing England can secure their first major senior men’s title since 1966, he said the World Cup campaign had strengthened his connection with the squad—making him feel they were truly his players—and provided a solid foundation for future progress.
Tuchel added: “I am extremely enthusiastic. We have moved another step forward, and I believe we are now where we need to be.”
