Tottenham: Cristian Romero Admits ‘I Made Mistakes’ Ahead of Atletico Madrid Transfer

News

Cristian Romero has admitted that he “made mistakes” during his five-year spell at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 28-year-old Argentina defender is close to joining Atletico Madrid after the Spanish club reached a £34.2m agreement with Spurs.

Romero made his final Tottenham appearance against Sunderland in April, leaving the pitch in tears after suffering a knee injury that kept him out of the club’s last six Premier League matches.

With Tottenham fighting to avoid relegation, some supporters were unhappy when Romero planned to travel to Argentina for the final match of the season so he could watch his former club Belgrano contest the Primera Division Apertura final.

However, he eventually returned to England and attended Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over Everton, a result that secured their survival and a second successive 17th-place finish.

“I understand that I did not always get everything right,” Romero wrote on X., external “What reassures me is knowing that I gave everything I had, representing this shirt with pride, passion and total commitment.”

After arriving from Atalanta in 2021, Romero established himself as an important member of Tottenham’s defence and played 156 times for the club.

The highlight of his Spurs career came when he helped them defeat Manchester United in the 2025 Europa League final, ending the club’s 17-year wait for a trophy.

“I came here with one ambition: to earn a lasting place in the history of this club,” Romero continued.

“I understood that achieving it would require dedication, sacrifice and accomplishing something that had remained out of reach for many years: bringing a trophy back to the club. Together, we achieved that goal.

“Although I am moving on, this club will always hold a special place in my heart. I arrived as an outsider, but I depart feeling permanently connected to all of you.

“With my deepest affection and respect, thank you for all the memories.”
