Women’s Super League: Manchester United Near Agreement to Sign Rebeca Bernal

News

Manchester United are nearing an agreement to recruit Mexico international Rebeca Bernal from Washington Spirit.

The 29-year-old is capable of playing in central defence or midfield and would be the first Mexican footballer to appear in the Women’s Super League.

Bernal moved to the Spirit from CF Monterrey in February 2025 and has since made 41 appearances for the club.

She helped the Washington side secure the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2025.

Bernal was unavailable for the Spirit’s NWSL match against Bay FC on Sunday, with the club stating that she had an “excused absence”.

At international level, she has earned 65 caps for Mexico and scored seven goals. One of those was the decisive strike against Chile in the 2023 Pan American Games women’s football final, which delivered Mexico’s first title in the competition.

United will begin their WSL season under new head coach Eva Olid away to London City Lionesses on Friday. The club have already added defender Andrea Medina from Atletico Madrid, goalkeeper Janina Leitzig from Leicester City and Swedish winger Monica Jusu Bah from BK Hacken.
