Manchester City have turned down Barcelona’s improved offer of approximately €60m (£51m) for Rodri. Meanwhile, Chelsea have given City until 5pm BST on Friday to submit a £120m bid for Enzo Fernández, who is being considered as a possible replacement.
Barcelona raised their original €45m proposal on Tuesday, but the new bid was also rejected. City are believed to value Rodri at between £60m and £65m. The midfielder captained Spain to World Cup glory and has previously won the Ballon d’Or.
The 30-year-old has indicated that Barcelona is his preferred destination, and City believe a move to the Camp Nou is now highly likely. As a result, Fernández has emerged as their leading candidate to fill the vacancy in Enzo Maresca’s squad.
Fernández would bring considerable experience and leadership, having captained Chelsea and won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, Chelsea maintain that City and other interested clubs have already had two months to formalise their interest. Unless an official £120m offer arrives before 5pm on Friday, the 25-year-old will stay at the club.
City could raise part of the required funds by selling Tijjani Reijnders to Al-Qadsiah. Negotiations with the Saudi Arabian side are reportedly at an advanced stage over a deal worth about €60m for the 28-year-old Dutch midfielder, who joined City last summer.
