Lionel Messi Comes Off the Bench for Inter Miami Following His Father’s Death

Messi missed Miami’s 2-1 defeat by Monterrey in the Leagues Cup on Saturday, but told coach Guillermo Hoyos that he was ready to feature in the crucial match against Mexican club Leon.

This marks the first time Miami have exited the tournament during its opening stage since the Leagues Cup was enlarged in 2023, when Messi joined the club and helped them win the title.

Jorge had represented Messi from the age of 14, witnessing his rise into one of football’s finest players and standing alongside him when he led his country to World Cup success in 2022.

Argentina advanced to the final of this summer’s competition but suffered a 1-0 extra-time defeat against Spain. Messi revealed that, despite his father’s worsening health, Jorge had encouraged him to compete in one final World Cup.

Miami midfielder Yannick Bright, who netted his team’s second goal against Leon, described Messi’s comeback as remarkable and said the squad wanted to stand by their captain.

“I did not think he would be there,” Bright said. “His decision shows just how deeply he cares. As soon as I saw him, I knew I wanted to give everything I had for him.”

“He is going through an extremely difficult period. We are doing our best to remain close and give him all the support we can, although we know it is a great deal to cope with.”

Leon manager Javier Gandolfi said Messi possesses qualities that distinguish him from everyone else.

He added: “Once again, he showed today exactly what kind of person and player he is.”
