Leeds United Sign James Trafford from Manchester City in Deal Worth Up to £45m

Trafford’s initial transfer fees have now surpassed £80m in total.

Under the terms of his move to Leeds, City will keep a 20% sell-on clause and retain matching rights, allowing them first refusal if they equal any future bid for Trafford.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke appears prepared to pay a significant fee despite Trafford receiving limited playing time at Manchester City last season, with Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier both leaving Elland Road this summer.

Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns are still at the club, although Perri was replaced by Darlow during the second half of last season and made no further Premier League appearances following a 4-3 loss to Newcastle on 7 January.

Leeds are backing the promise of a young goalkeeper who produced many of his finest performances in the Championship for Burnley, conceding only 16 times across 45 matches.

Although Trafford has made just 32 appearances in the top division, former Burnley manager Scott Parker praised the goalkeeper’s resurgence at Turf Moor before his switch to the Etihad.

Described as “world class” by Parker, Trafford played a major role in Burnley’s return to the Premier League in 2024-25, recording 29 clean sheets and an 84.47% save rate.

Trafford started his career with City and spent time on loan at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before signing for Burnley in 2023.

He featured 73 times for Burnley before City exercised their buy-back clause last summer.
