Alan Knight, the former Portsmouth goalkeeper who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2024, has passed away at the age of 65.
Knight devoted 22 years of his playing career to Fratton Park, recording 801 appearances from 1978 to 2000 and setting the record for the most games played by a goalkeeper for one English club.
Portsmouth supporters affectionately called him The Legend. Following his retirement, he continued serving the club as a coach and ambassador.
Paying an emotional tribute to their former goalkeeper, a statement from the club, external said: “Although the term legend is frequently used too freely in football, Alan remaining known as The Legend at Pompey more than two decades after his retirement shows just how much he meant to the club.
“He will be deeply missed by the Fratton Park supporters, his former team-mates and everyone at the club who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
“At this profoundly difficult time, our thoughts are with his wife Heather, his daughters Jade and Rebekah, and the rest of his family and friends. May The Legend rest in peace.”
Portsmouth captain Marlon Pack wrote on social media: “Rest in peace, Knightsie. He was a genuine club icon whose passion for Portsmouth was undeniable, and he contributed enormously to both the football club and the wider community for many years.”
