Having coached Charles at Northern Ireland youth level, Lyttle was always convinced that the youngster had the ability to succeed.
“He is incredibly composed. I genuinely do not think he has shown his full capacity yet, and there is still much more to come from him,” Lyttle said in a 2021 interview.
“He remains calm on the ball, identifies passing opportunities, breaks through defensive lines and possesses excellent technical ability. He can deliver both long and short passes, compete physically and is a genuine ball-playing centre-back with an excellent attitude.
“He must continue developing as he moves to higher levels, but everything I have seen from the young Shea suggests he has all the qualities required.”
Charles also benefited from training alongside some of the world’s leading players at Manchester City, including Rodri and Fernandinho. He eventually received his first Premier League opportunity in May 2023, having already earned six senior international appearances.
With Pep Guardiola’s team already confirmed as Premier League champions, Charles made his City debut from the bench during the second half of the final-day match against Brentford.
“The quality is exceptionally high whenever we train with the senior squad, so every session gives us an opportunity to improve,” Charles said in 2022.
“Training alongside players such as Rodri and Fernandinho is demanding, but it is also very rewarding.”
