England defender Lucy Bronze believes that a Uefa boycott of Fifa tournaments would be the correct decision for the long-term future of football, even though it could negatively affect the women’s game.
Speaking during Chelsea’s pre-season tour in New Zealand, Bronze said European players should remain committed to their principles and do what they believe is best for the sport.
She added that players may need to refuse to participate in competitions if that is what the situation requires.
Bronze stressed that the issue concerns the game’s long-term direction rather than only its immediate future.
She said any action should help ensure that future generations of girls and boys inherit a sport that continues to develop in a positive way over the coming decades.
Former England defender Anita Asante warned last week that women’s football competitions would probably be the first events to suffer.
Asante added that the consequences could be significant if the dispute remains unresolved when England’s qualifying matches begin, particularly given the already crowded schedule.
Baroness Campbell, the former Football Association director of women’s football, described the possibility of the women’s game being affected first as deeply unfortunate.
The English FA has formally withdrawn its backing for Infantino, while the football associations of Wales, Albania and Croatia are also among those no longer supporting the 56-year-old.
