“I knew about the tragedy, but I had not fully understood the scale of what occurred or the suffering endured by those involved,” Barry-Murphy said after the 1-0 win.

“It was essential for the players to view the footage so they could appreciate what the local community had experienced.

“We arranged the visit because we felt it carried enormous importance.

“Being there is inevitably an emotional experience, particularly when you see the gravestones of those who lost their lives.

“You also hear the accounts of the people who were present that day. What they endured is almost impossible to grasp.

“The result could never be guaranteed, but we needed to deliver a performance that showed we understood the significance of the occasion and who we were representing.

“On such a deeply meaningful day, it mattered greatly that we performed in that manner.”

In his matchday programme notes, Barry-Murphy wrote that the community had demonstrated the true meaning of unity “in circumstances beyond imagination” and said he wanted his team to reflect those same values. The programme’s front cover featured the clock recovered from the debris, which had stopped at the moment of the disaster.

Before kick-off, a minute’s silence was observed flawlessly by supporters of both Cardiff and Birmingham.

Barry-Murphy also disclosed that academy coach Dennis Moss joined the trip to Aberfan, one day before the commemorations marking the tragedy’s 60th anniversary. Moss had helped with the rescue operation.

“At the age of 18, he travelled from Cardiff as one of the earliest responders and began helping to recover victims from the wreckage,” he said.

“He accompanied us, and it was clear how deeply returning to that place affected him.”
